Geography
The SMEDD operates across the counties of Sonoma and Mendocino, encompassing 3.6 million acres of fertile agricultural valleys, urbanized areas, dramatic coastline, rugged coastal mountains, rivers and lakes. The region has a long economic history closely tied to the development and exploitation of natural resources including fishing, logging, and agriculture. Today, the SMEDD is charged with supporting both counties, their 13 cities and large unicorporated areas in realizing new, sustainable and resilient economic opportunities and chartering a strategic path towards a more vital future for all.
