Yana Valachovic

Yana is passionate about finding solutions to challenging problems, bringing her skills in forestry, natural resources research, wildfire mitigation, and years rooted in County government and community engagement. Her recent research has focused on wildfire resilience, primarily of the built environment. She helped craft key state policies shaping California’s progression toward fire adaptation and initiated the development of UC ANR’s new Fire Network. Yana has multiple roles on the California Governor’s Wildfire Forest Resilience Task Force and is a member of California's Wildfire Mitigation Committee and the Risk Modelling Committee. She is a co-lead of the California Fire Science Consortium and a founding member of the Northern California Prescribed Fire Council. Yana enjoys working in the policy arena and has been a technical resource for bioenergy, forest management, home hardening, and improvements to defensible space legislation. She is focused on driving meaningful advancements in the conservation and management of California’s natural landscapes and the protection of communities. Yana is also a California Registered Professional forester, and her skill set includes redwood and Douglas-fir silviculture, forest policy, education, incentives to improve forest stewardship, watershed management, conservation biology, fuels management, and insect and disease management.
